The Kentwood MI city is situated in the northwest of the state of Michigan. The population is 54,304. It borders the city of Grand Rapids on the northwest and is the third most populous municipality in the Greater Grand Rapids area. The government of Kentwood is comprised of a mayor, who is also the city manager, and a city commission. The mayor presides over meetings of the city commission and is also known as the mayor pro tempore. The mayor does not have veto power over the city’s actions. The residents of Kentwood elect the mayor, city clerk, and city treasurer to four-year staggered terms, as well as six city commissioners. In addition to the mayor, each ward elects a commissioner, with one city commissioner in each ward. The remaining four commissioners are elected at-large by the voters.
In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency installed a methane flare near the Kentwood Library. The methane flare is a method used to burn excess landfill methane, and the government has agreed to install it at the library. Previously, the library was located on Kalamazoo Avenue south of 44th Street. The Bowen/Stauffer family donated the property to the city for the library. In addition to public schools in the city, two private schools are located nearby.
